Bicycles without borders
AIM
Since 2015, the Bicycles Without Borders Foundation has been developing the Bicycles for Education project in Senegal. The project aims to:
Facilitate access to education for children and young people through bicycles.
The 180 is the cost of adding a new bicycle to an institute's fleet. In other words, it includes, in addition to the cost of the bicycle's raw materials, all the management costs so that a student can finally use it (transport, assembly in Senegal, storage
in the Factory, spare parts, training, coordination with schools, registration, repair shop parking, dissemination costs...). This would be a bit of the distribution scheme in % of the costs.
BENEFITS
With the implementation of the project, its beneficiaries obtain the following results:
- School absenteeism is reduced
- Students arrive to class on time
- Students get less tired (1)
- Increases school performance (2)
(1) Energy consumption is five times less cycling than walking.
(2) In 2017, the Lycée de Palmarin obtained the highest number of BAC passes (university access) in the entire Fatick region (57% passes vs. a national average of 31%).
DESCRIPTION
The proyect consists in:
- Deliver bicycles to high schools in Senegal for the students who live furthest away and the best in each class.
- Start a bicycle workshop in each institute.
- Build parking for bicycles.
EXECUTION
As a first step, the workshop and parking are built. The bikes are then delivered to the institute, who distributes them among the students who live furthest from the school and among those who obtain the best results in the evaluations.
Families contribute an annual fee of 10,000 CFA (15 ) to finance the costs of the repair shop, the mechanic's salary and spare parts..
All these actors intervene in the execution:
- The management team of the Senegalese institute
- Students, their families and the entire community
- The sponsors
